Ve Etchanan - A Love Story

The essence of the day is the evening. The essence of the evening is Shabbos evenings. The essence of Shabbos evenings is Yom Tov.  The essence of Yom Tov is Tishrei. The essence of Tishrei is Yom Kipur. The essence of Yom Kippur is the moment on Simchat Torah when you say the pasuk,
"You have been shown, in order to know that the Lord He is God; there is none else besides Him. "

לה אַתָּה הָרְאֵתָ לָדַעַת, כִּי יְהוָה הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים:
   אֵין עוֹד, מִלְּבַדּוֹ

(Pasuk from this week's Parsha)

   - Slonimer Rebbe

The Torah is a love story. The clearest representation of this motif is the book Shir Hashirim or Song of Songs, written by King Solomon. It is a romantic love poem between the Jewish people and God.  God describes himself as a jealous God when it comes to idol worship. He does not want us worshipping other gods.

Why does God care so much about the Jews serving other gods? He is God and is unaffected by our allegiance.

In a relationship each partner wants to feel as though "there is no one else beside them" . Everything we do is a build up to when you and your Beloved can be alone together, mentally. Within each others thoughts.  This is what upsets god so much about idol worship and why acknowledging he is the only God is the peak of our spiritual experience.

Because when the Jews worship other gods and idols or you spend time on the phone when you are on a date with your wife , you are demonstrating that they are not the focus of your life, they are not the only thing that exists in your world.

Fulfilling the will of Hashem , just as fulfilling the will of our Beloved should be the  task that has our attention, full attention.

Once again you are exactly right. When you are with G-d or when you are with your spouse/partner, one should be fully engaged with your mind and your heart and not be distracted. Words to live by.
