Origin Stories 

Last mother’s day my father made an announcement. He said we were not really Epsteins, our last name is unknown.....

This week we begin a new book of the Torah named Shemot, which means names.The story starts with a list of the names of the people who descended to Egypt. The names were  listed earlier in the book  of Berashit, why the repetition?  Let’s answer this question with a question.

Sefer Bereishit (The book of Genesis) is the origin story of the universe and humanity, as well as the tribe of Israel. Sefer Shemot is the origin story of the Jewish people as a nation and Parashat Shemot is the origin story of Moses as a leader. Anyone who has ever read comic books understands the importance of the origin story, it makes you who you are. Read More

Who’s the Boss

This week's Parsha contains the origin story of Moshe. Moshe's adult narrative begins with him witnessing  an Egyptian beating a Jew, Moshe kills the Egyptian and must flee Egypt. When he arrives in a new location again he helps the downtrodden by defending the cattle of Yitro's daughters and finnaly when he is shepperding sheep he shows a sensitivity to the other land owners by takeing the sheep deep past the wilderness so they will not graze on others property. Read More
