A group of Crows is called a murder, a group of ravens, a conspiracy or an unkindness. When an animal enters a group often a new moniker is attached to this union. These groups as a unit are able to achieve far more than each individual member could ever hope for. This concept is known as synergy, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. For example: Ant’s or bee’s building a colony or ducks flying in a V shape.
Ducks fly in a V shape because it is more aerodynamic for all the birds, except the lead bird who has no advantage. In a V formation all the ducks switch off being the leed duck and so everyone benefits from joining together.
Synergy or the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts is a concept essential to music. Each individual instrument in a symphony reaches its full potential when it combines in perfect harmony with the other instruments.
