This week's Parsha contains the origin story of Moshe. Moshe's adult narrative begins with him witnessing an Egyptian beating a Jew, Moshe kills the Egyptian and must flee Egypt. When he arrives in a new location again he helps the downtrodden by defending the cattle of Yitro's daughters and finnaly when he is shepperding sheep he shows a sensitivity to the other land owners by takeing the sheep deep past the wilderness so they will not graze on others property.
The Bixby letter was a letter writen personaly by Abraham Lincoln to a mother who lost five sons in the civil war. Although it is breif it expresses the deep heartfelt appreciation Lincoln had for this mothers contribution for the war effort. Lincoln ends with " I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement , and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and loast, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the alter of freedom"
Rav Shlomo Zalmen Aurbach points out that all of these incidents leading up to Moshe being chosen for a leader deal with relationships and sensetivity towards other people and not ritual or intellectual matters. A Key to being a great leader is having compassion for the downtrodden and unrepresented.
The Billionaire mayer of New York Mike Bloomberg says he wants to hear from the common man. So he gave out his home phone number and it is listed in the white pages. One night an irate New York called about a pot hole on her street. She was taken aback when Mayor Bloomberg answered the call and asked what she needed. Shocked, not having considered the Mayer would acutely answer the phone. They disscused the issue and she was instructed to call 311. She then apoligized for bothering Mike so late at night, he said no problem.
It has been rumored that Pope Francis dresses up in an ordinary priest outfit and distributes money to the poor in Rome at night. He enjoys personaly giving those in need funds.
No Matter how rich and powerful a leader becomes they must always remember who they need to look out for and who needs there help. When God needed a shepherd for his most beloved sheep he chose someone who cared for each one, this was who Moshe was.
