All of life is a journey from the concealed to the revealed.
In this week's parsha Moshe is finishing his farewell address to the Jewish people. He states, “The hidden things are the concern of Hashem your G-d. Regarding the revealed things, it is ours and our children’s responsibility forever to observe the words of this Torah.” (Devarim 29:28)
This pasuk is one of the most cryptic verses in the Torah. What are these hidden things that Moshe is referencing?
One explanation, is that God is concerned with is the internal secret aspects of the universe, how the universe functions. Science is the process of humanity journeying from a dark blurry understanding of the world to a clearer picture of the way the world works. At one level inventions and technology are a form of prophecy, a revelation of the inner workings of the universe God created, revealed through humanity.
Another idea about the "hidden aspects", is they represent our thoughts. The days of judgment, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kipur are coming up soon. God is the ultimate judge and knows all of our thoughts. God knows us better then we know ourselves. We must work on understanding our thoughts and training ourselves to understand our minds.
Humanity is on a journey of discovering the nature of the world through science, each individual is also on a journey of self discovery. Traveling from selfishness to becoming completely self aware. How do we achieve this task of self discovery? Through observing the Torah.
This is the process we undergo during these days of awe. One way to understand our thoughts is to observe our actions. Taking an inventory of our actions over the past year and reflecting on what our thought process was is a large aspect of self discovery and Teshuvah.
