In this week’s Parsha the Jewish people receive the ten commandments. The first set of luchot (tablets) were given with great fanfare, the nation saw the thunder and the mountain was covered in smoke. God personally carved the tablets.
Unfortunately the nation sinned and the first set of tablets were destroyed. Moshe went back up the mountain, but this time with no special effects. He had to carve the second set of tablets himself..
In the 1952 Olympics runner Roger Bannister expected to medal, he finished fourth. He began to focus on a new goal, a sub 4 minute mile. Many said it was impossible , yet only two years later he achieved the goal and he was the first person to ever run a sub 4 minute mile. After he achieved this feat, several others soon after broke the record as well.
Bannister did not earn this immortal achievement one sunny day in May. He broke the record in front of the fans and press with great excitement and energy. However he was able to earn the record through solitary hard work running on cold nights and early mornings. There were no fans, no cameras, no excitement when he practiced and put in the time, like Moshe carving out the luchot by himself.
The hard work we do, day in and day out , without press and fanfare is what makes us who we are and who we become. This quiet dedication is what determines what is lasting inside all of us and for all time. The second set of luchot that Moshe carved himself, lasted forever.
