The oldest known archeological text of the Bible is  called the  Ketef Hinnom. It contains the priestly blessings from this week’s parshah and dates back to First Temple times around 600 B.C.  It is an ancient prayer for peace, still chanted today..

“To achieve peace you must go to war” - Ancient paradox

The Netivat Shalom points out that the priestly blessing ends with the word “shalom”,  peace and  two sections of the Shmoneh Esreh ( 18 blessing personal meditation ) end with the word “shalom” . The Jews, G-D and Mashiyach are also all called Shalom.  Peace is central.

The signature of the Jewish nation is peace. This is the holy message the prophet Yeshaya has brought to mankind, the utopian hope for world peace. World peace  is a fundamental objective of Judaism.

“An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” MLK

Shalom is not a passive state achieved when there is no  war. Peace must be actively cultivated. Israel, the country and the people  has had to fight for their  right to survive since their inception. The main reason Israel is despised in the Middle East is Israel’s democracy, not theology ( Many of you may argue about this).

“The whole world must see that Israel must exist and has the right to exist, and is one of the great outposts of democracy in the world”  - MLK
