B'shalach
"The object of all music should be the praise of God"- Johan Sebastien Bach
1. This week is Shabbos Shirah (Song). The Jews miraculously escape from the Egyptian army at the sea and break out in to a spontaneous song of gratitude.
2. After Moses performs his miracle par exe-lance, the splitting of the sea, he has the attention of the nation. What does he do with this opportunity? He does not give a speech about faith and believing in God, he does not give advice. Moses sings a song together with the entire nation. Why?
"One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain" - Bob Marley
3. Fundamental elements of spirituality are failed by a description using words . You can not explain color to a blind man. It must be experienced. Music is not just sheet notes or frequencies the ear picks up. The relationship of the soul to the body is akin to notes and music.Music is a spiritual experience.
Several paths to Hashem, 13 different streams at the splitting of the sea. All were heading to the same place.
3. If you give a speech someone could disagree or misinterpret it. When you sing a song as a group, around a campfire or Shabbos table, it is a valuable shared experience. Shlomo Carlbach brought Jews together and connected them to God in ways text study or ritual practice did not and could not.
3. The Cantor can bring people together in ways the Rabbi can not. Apprehension of Gods unity can beexperienced thru harmonious melodies. Moses knew this experience was just as important as any motivational speech .
This Shabbat I am going to use song to connect to Hashem and others to create harmony harmonically .
Shabbat Shalom,
Dan
